In April 1925, the first fire department in the town and village of Edwards was established. The original fire department had a total of 30 members. The need for a fire department was brought about by a fire in the late 1800's that swept through the village and destroyed much of it.
In the early days, due to lack of money and resources, the department was not very successful in their fire fighting efforts. One of the earliest pieces of equipment was a man power drawn hose reel which they hooked to nearby water hydrants or other sources.
As time went by and money became available, more and more modern equipment was bought and the success rate improved. In the beginning of the fire district, the Village of Edwards voted to spend a total of $3000 for a water system.
In today's department there are 42 active members, ten of them are
Emergency Medical Technicians and respond to medical emergencies in the
community.
The department is governed by a board of Fire Commissioners and the department funding is provided by the town budget.
The fire department responds to emergencies in a
51 square mile, area which encompasses the town and village of Edwards.
We have a 2001 Dodge Brush Truck, a 1993 International 1000, 1000 gallon
engine made by KME, a 1996 International 2000 gallon tanker and a 2005
International 1500, 1000 gallon engine both built by 4GUYS Fire
Apparatus. The rescue squad is equipped with a 2008 ambulance,
which provides basic and Advanced Life Support services. In addition, the department owns a
1954 Dodge Pumper, called the Blitz Buggy, not active for field service but maintained solely for parades.
The volunteer fire department is very diversified in that it takes people from all walks of life. We have as our members, clergymen, engineers, miners, store owners, construction workers, doctors, retired people, nurses, mill workers and many others too numerous to mention. As you can see, it takes all kinds of people to make a volunteer fire department.

“INSIDE OR OUT”
By Dale Barker, 2006
As the alarm rings out,
There’s a sound of a distant shout.
In the dark sky there’s a glow,
As the fire and flames start to grow.
Fear is the feeling in the air,
As everyone is starting to care.
Where was that shout?
Was it from the inside or out?
The intensity of the fire grows,
And then nobody knows.
Where was the shout?
Was it inside or out?
As the smoke grows thick,
And we started to feel sick.
The result of the shout,
Thank God it was on the out.
